Did you hear? Lady Gaga is (probably) going to play Harley Quinn in a musical sequel to Joker. While that’s certainly interesting casting, she’ll have a hard time displacing from my heart my current favorite iteration of the character, from HBO Max’s foul-mouthed, violently funny, just plain violent Harley Quinn animated series, which returns for season three sometimes this month.
This Harley is a no-holds-barred-or-words-bleeped exaggeration of the Batman: The Animated Series femme fatal first introduced in 1993. Since getting dumped by the Joker, she’s teamed up with fellow villainess Poison Ivy to wreak her own special brand of havoc, out of the shadow of her one-time paramour. The results are hyper-cartoonish and wildly over-the-top, with clever writing that transforms Harley from a twisted, sexy sidekick into a fractured feminist icon. I’m happy to have her back

Otherwise, it’s a bit of a quiet month on HBO Max, with the biggest call-outs being the launch of the new Pretty Little Liars spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (July 28); The Rehearsal (July 15), a new series from Nathan For You mastermind Nathan Fielder, and Rap Sh!t (July 21), a comedy from Insecure creator Issa Rae about two struggling Miami rappers trying to land their big break.
