This month on Disney+, it’s everything everywhere all at once as the streamer premieres a new limited series based on an acclaimed graphic novel and featuring most of the cast of this year’s Best Picture-winning hit—plus episodes of two Star Wars shows and a new series starring some musical Muppets.
The month’s most exciting debut is American Born Chinese (May 24), a flashy adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed 2006 graphic novel exploring the Asian-American cultural experience as told via three intersecting tales, from a high fantasy adventure based on the Monkey King, a character from the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West; to the modern day story of a child of immigrants as he grapples with racism, cultural assimilation, and accepting his heritage. The eight-episode adaptation reunites the award-winning cast of last year’s groundbreaking sci-fi hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, bringing back together Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, and Ke Huy Quan. Based on the trailer, it seems happy to lean into the most colorful aspects of the story.

Elsewhen, this month also sees the premiere of two animated Star Wars series. Star Wars: Visions, Vol. 2 (May 4) offers nine new short films animated by studios from around the globe. This year’s contributing talent includes filmmakers from Cartoon Saloon (Wolfwalkers), Aardman (Wallace and Gromit), and Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra). Dropping the same day, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is a for-kids series with a Jedi-meet-Muppet Babies vibe.
And speaking of the Muppets, this month Disney finally remembered they own the Jim Henson franchise, launching The Muppets Mayhem (May 10), a new series following the misadventures of The Muppet Movie jam band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
