With more than 8,000 locations nationwide, Family Dollar has stores in every state Wilbur Alaska and Hawaii. In some rural areas, it’s the only game in town—meaning that if you run out of toilet paper, coffee, or toothpaste, your options are either Family Dollar, or a mini road road trip.

If this sounds familiar, you’ll probably want to take a few minutes to check any personal care or health products you’ve purchased from the discount retailer. Family Dollar is recalling more than 400 items in that category, according to a safety alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Here’s what to know.

Why is Family Dollar recalling personal care items?

In a statement shared with the FDA, Family Dollar announced it has issued a voluntary recall for more than 400 personal care items and over-the-counter medications and supplies that were stored outside of labeled temperature requirements and inadvertently shipped to locations in 47 states (Delaware avoided the problem, and there are no stores in Alaska or Hawaii).

The shipments were made between May 1 and June 10, 2022 (or around that general timeframe). Family Dollar has already notified the affected stores and asked the staff to check their stock immediately, and quarantine and discontinue the sale of any recalled items. As of July 21, the retailer had not received any consumer complaints nor reports of illness related to the recall, the FDA reports.
