If you don’t typically file a tax return, you’re running out of time to request the $500-per-child coronavirus relief payment for your kids.

If you didn’t file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, the IRS wants you to use the non-filer tool by noon Eastern time tomorrow, April 22, to notify the agency to add $500 per eligible child to your $1,200 relief payment.

If you get Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), or Railroad Retirement benefits and you don’t usually file a tax return, you should use the non- filer tool ASAP to meet the April 22 deadline.

If you get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Veterans Administration benefits, you’ll have extra time to notify the IRS about the children in your household by using the non-filer tool. The IRS says SSI recipients will get their payments in early May, while the payment schedule for VA benefit recipients has not been determined.

Keep in mind that if you usually file taxes and have already filed for either 2018 or 2019, you probably don’t need to do anything.

But if you’re in one of the above groups and the IRS doesn’t already know about your children, you should act ASAP to notify the agency.

If you don’t make the deadline (or for SSI/VA benefits, you don’t notify the IRS before your check gets printed), you’ll have to wait until the 2020 tax season begins in spring 2021, and you’ll have to file a tax return then to get your $500 credit per child.
