Mo Willems Will Doodle for Democracy Tonight

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that when things get tough, it’s important to seek out any and all forms of distraction. Luckily, children’s book author and illustrator Mo Willems has walked with us on this stress journey before, reminding us that when things get bad, one can always pick up a marker and start doodling. Tonight, as the election results (maybe?) start to roll in, he’ll be hosting a live event called “Democracy Doodle 2020.”

“It’s a very important election, and a lot of people on other screens are going to be saying very important things,” Willems tells us in a promotional video about the event. “We are going to doodle.”

In his role as education artist-in-residence at the Kennedy Center, Willems hosted a similar series in the spring called Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems in which he showed kids (and grown-ups) how to draw some of his most beloved characters, including the Pigeon.

If you’re feeling the need for a bit of a distraction tonight, grab some paper and markers and head to the Kennedy Center’s website at 7 p.m. ET to doodle in the name of democracy.
