It’s that time of year again—when your search results are crowded with variations of “X Best Gift Ideas for Y”-style articles. And this seems like one of them, but it isn’t. Well, it is. But it isn’t.
Because when you’re looking for quick assistance from the algorithm regarding what to buy your vaguely intimidating boss or your brother-in-law whose politics you desperately want to remain a mystery, seeing the same ideas over and over again means you’re not likely to amaze anyone with your gift-giving skills. And because the algorithm is an emotionless god, you are likely to give someone the same gift they received from the six other people Googling “best gifts for co-worker I barely know except for that time we cried together in adjacent bathroom stalls.”
Finding a unique gift is important. You want your gift recipient to feel special, to feel like you put some thought into the gift. You want them to see your gift and think, ‘wow, they really get me!’ Or at least ‘huh, this was ... unexpected.’
Well, you’re in luck, because this is not your typical gift guide. This is a list of thoughtful, useful, and interesting gifts that have flown under the radar, and which won’t be found on most other lists. Probably.
